In this study, the authors wanted to see whether polymorphism (or different forms) of interleukin-1 betal (IL-1beta) promoter and exon 5 gene can serve as a genetic “marker” of gout.

The authors enrolled 196 subjects with gout and 103 healthy control subjects and examined their DNA. They found that there was no association of the IL-1beta promoter region with gout – however, they found that there is some link between this promoter region with hypertriglyceridemia (increased levels of triglycerides in the blood).
