Selective COX II inhibitors have been found to be effective for active gout. In this article, the author reviewed two potential drugs currently in clinical trials: febuxostat, an inhibitor of the xanthine oxidase enzyme (which is involved in uric acid production), and PEGylated uricases (a chemically modified recombinant mammalian enzyme that degrades uric acid).
