Previously, acne was considered an infectious disease caused by Propioniium bacteria acnes, however, it was subsequently shown that inflammation caused by the bacteria was more important than simple infection.

Also, it was previously thought that androgens or male sex hormones were the agents that stimulate sebum production from the sebaceous glands. Today, however, neuromediators have also been identified as stimulants of sebum production.
