Retinoids is a class of drugs used to inhibit comedo or acne lesion formation and suppress the acne-causing Propionibacterium acnes. To increase efficacy of acne treatment, combination of agents can be used – however, with increased side effects.

To increase tolerance to combination theapy, the authors suggested using new retinoids called adapalene, using new delivery system such as the tritenoin microsphere delivery system, and using alternative dosing schedules such as prescribing it for only a short period or taking the medications every other day.
