High school dietary dairy intake and teenage acne

Title: High school dietary dairy intake and teenage acne
Authors:
Adebamowo CA, et al.
Publication: J Am Acad Dermatol. 2005 Feb;52(2):207-14.

The authors studied 47,355 women who completed questionnaires on high school diet and physician-diagnosed severe teenage acne. The authors then accounted for age, age at first menstrual period, body mass index, energy intake and prevalence ratio (or relative risk) of acne. They found that teenagers who ate more of the following dietary products are at higher risk of developing acne:

• Total milk
• Skim milk
• Instant breakfast drink
• Sherbert
• Cottage cheese
• Cream cheese

The authors suspect that the presence of hormones and other bioactive molecules in milk may be responsible for this link between dietary food and acne.
