Superoxide Dismutase and Myeloperoxidase Activities in Acne

Title: Superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase activities in the polymorphonuclear leukocytes in acne vulgaris

In this study, the authors wanted to investigate the role of oxygen radicals in acne inflammation. They enrolled 43 patients with acne and 24 healthy controls, and measured enzyme activities (myeloperoxidase/MPO and superoxide dismutase/SOD) to check the levels of oxygen radicals.

The authors found that there is no difference in the activity of MPO, but a statistically lower activity of SOD in patients with acne as compared to the healthy control. Because of this, the authors suggest that oxygen radicals may play a role in acne and that new anti-acne drugs should include substances with anti-oxidant properties.
