Antibacterial Effect of Thai Plants against Acne Bacteria

Title: Antimicrobial effects of Thai medicinal plants against acne-inducing bacteria
Authors:
Chomnawang MT, et al.
Publication: J Ethnopharmacol. 2005 Jul 8; [Epub ahead of print]

The authors used crude extracts of medicial plants found in Thailand to see which ones can inhibit the growth of acne causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis in a test tube. They found that Senna alata, Eupatorium odoratum, Barleria lupulina, and especially Garcinia mangostana, can inhibit bacterial growth.

The extract of Garcinia mangostana, a plant xanthone derivative called mangostin, is shown to be responsible for the antimicrobial effect of this plant.
