Sebaceous Cyst


Sebaceous cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst is a common growth of the skin, where the skin "folds" onto intself and creating a small cyst or sac.

Symptoms of Sebaceous Cyst

The symptoms of sebaceous cysts are:

  • Lump underneath the skin
  • White, yellow, or flesh-tone in color
  • Slow growing
  • Usually small in size, but can grow to the size of a golf ball over many years
  • Painless, unless they rupture or become infected
  • Filled with a thick, yellow substance with bad odor

These cysts tend to develop in:

  • Scalp
  • Upper back
  • Back of neck

If the cysts are infected, they become:

  • Red in color
  • Swollen
  • Irritated
  • Tender and painful

Treatment for Sebaceous Cysts

Infected cysts may require:

  • Surgical drainage
  • Warm compress
  • Antibiotics
  • Surgical removal
