Basal cell carcinoma is a common and slow-growing skin tumor. It usually affects people with light skin, especially those with high sun exposure. Basal cell carcinoma can also affect people with immune system impairment or defect in DNA repairing machinery.

Low magnification of skin cross-section. Notice the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue layers of the skin and the areas of the tumor invasion on top.
Tumor cells appear to bud off from the epidermis and grow downward as islands and cords of basophilic cells. Notice the hyperchromatic nuclei and jagged edges or palisading of cells. (Normal basal cells mature and lose their nuclei - tumor cells don't).
